We can trust God in turbulent times because He is all powerful.

It is very easy for us to become overwhelmed in times when everything seems to be going off the normal track and out of control. We expect and hope for our situation to remain constant and generally within our sphere of comfort. But when things began to change we tend to feel anxious. And although we theoretically know that we are never in control of everything, we nonetheless feel more anxiety when our loss of control becomes more apparent.

That is when we need to remind ourselves that our Heavenly Father is Omnipotent, that is, He is all powerful.

Revelation 19:6   Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.

The Bible declares that God is the Almighty One fifty-six times. And the title “the Almighty” is used of no one but God. God identified Himself to Abram by this attribute.

Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,

When Abram and Sarah were near 100 years old they struggled to believe God’s announcement that they would have a baby. In response to Abram and Sarah’s reticence God said,

Genesis 18:14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”

And by means of God’s supernatural power, Sarah gave birth to their son of promise.

While God chooses not to shield us from many of the consequences of living in a sinful world, He reminds us that none of His purposes can be thwarded.

Job 42:2 “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

When the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she will have a son even though she is a virgin, she wonders how that can be.

Luke 1:34–37 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.”

The power of the Most High accomplished the virgin birth. Elizabeth’s bearing of a child in her old age provided a sign to Mary of God’s power. Mary’s response to this announcement of God’s power is a good model for us to follow.

Luke 1:38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

None of us can really imagine the amount of change God brought into Mary’s life. But she is willing to trust God and allow Him to use her in whatever way He desires.

So, whenever you and I experience anxiety due to situations either around us or even inside our own life, let us remember Mary’s faithful obedience to accept whatever purpose God had for her in the midst of this situation. God wants us to trust Him. And because we have believed in Jesus Christ, His Son, for our eternal life, the Almighty God is now our Heavenly Father. He will use His power to help us through the difficult circumstances.
