Course Introduction

Welcome to our course on the biblical basis for assurance of eternal life. The question is how can I know for sure that I have eternal life. Now, to those who have trusted Jesus Christ alone for eternal life, Satan likes to say, “But how can you be sure that you would go to heaven if you die tonight?” in order to create doubt and insecurity. We already looked at the lie to the non-Christian of “It involves works. Got to be good to get to heaven.” No, that’s a lie. And as we study God’s word, we realized from the first course that it is only by faith. It’s the grace of God that gives us eternal life as a gift. Our only condition is to put our faith in Jesus Christ for that eternal life. But once we do that, Satan does not want you to be happy to tell anyone else to be assured. So now he brings doubts in our mind. “Are you sure something really happened? I mean, you don’t feel any different. And look at your life, you still have struggles. You still sin. Are you sure that you’re really saved? Maybe you didn’t have enough faith. Maybe you didn’t believe the right thing. It wasn’t life-changing enough. Maybe would you really go to heaven if you died tonight?” That’s Satan’s lie. It is a lie. God wants us to know that for sure.

God tells us in his word that he wants us to be absolutely sure that we have eternal life. That’s the really good news. Then why do so many believers in Jesus Christ have so many doubts about their eternal life? We’re going to explore that. What God has provided everything needed for the security and assurance of the believer, we’re going to look at God’s word and what Jesus Christ and God has done for us to be secure. Unfortunately, there are many passages that are misinterpreted to cause believers to doubt their assurance. In a section talking about misinterpreted passages, we’ll be looking at more and more of these passages as we go along. If you struggle with your assurance for your justification, the scripture that I will share in this course is going to change your life.
